Instructions for Linux with NetworkManager

NetworkManager is available in several Linux distribution, such as Linux SuSE, Gentoo, Fedora Core, RedHat, Ubuntu and Debian. The following instructions were made in Linux Fedora Core 10.

First install the driver for your wireless card.

Then install the NetworkManager:

# yum install NetworkManager NetworkManager-gnome wpa_supplicant

Start the NetworkManger with the command:

# service NetworkManager start

If you want the NetworkManager to start at every start up, enter the command::

# chkconfig NetworkManager on

After installing and starting the NetworkManager, the icon will appear in the top right corner of the screen. The icon shows, that the computer is connected to the Internet.

Click on the icon of NetworkManager to see available wireless networks. (NetworkManager detects available wireless networks automatically).

Choose the network Eduroam from the list.

New window opens. Enter the following data:

Under “Wireless Security” choose WPA & WPA2 Enterprise. For “Authentication” choose Tunneled TLS. Set “Inner Authentication ” to PAP. In the field “User Name ” enter your username and in the field “Password” your password. “Anonymous Identity” is anonymous@home-organisation.si. You need to add the certificate of your organisation – in the “CA Certificate” filed. You can find the certificate on ARNES FTP server or at the user support department of your home organisation. Download the last .zip file, open it, find the correct certificate and put it on your local disk.

After entering the necessary data, click the Connect button.

When the connection is successfully established, you will see:

When connecting to the network, the icons change in the status toolbar: and when the connection is established, you will see the icon.

You can check your connection with the command:

Attention!

  • NetworkManager version has to be 0.6.5.or newer, otherwise the connection won’t be established (older versions do not support Phase 2 authentication)
  • If you have problems with authentication, try converting the certificate from .cer to .pem, sometimes it helps.
